Programme: Tigran Mansurians Requiem, Works by Soghomon Soghomonian (Komitas)

The music of Lebanese-born Armenian composer Tigran Mansurian involves modernism and minimalism, and it is equally well known by cinema fans and concert audiences. Mansurian composed few vocal and instrumental compositions, but those that he did present are very vivid and capacious, revealing elements of Armenian national sounds therein. Mansurian dedicated his Requiem (2011) to the victims of the Armenian genocide (1915-1917). Texts from Latin canons correlate with the typical prayer for the dead in the Orthodox Church, while the technique of minimalist repetition correlates with traditional Armenian songs. The grief that is heard in the opus confirm the strength of life. Armenian cultural traditions are centuries old, but this is the only requiem to have been composed by an Armenian composer. In autumn 2017, it was nominated for a prestigious Grammy award as best contemporary classical composition of the year, as well as for best choir performance.

This presentation of Mansurian's Requiem is supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia.
