On 11 December, the recording label Prima Classic has released a selection of sacred choral works performed by the Latvian opera singer Marina Rebeka under the title Credo, created in collaboration with the chamber orchestra Sinfonietta Riga and the Latvian Radio Choir. The recording sessions for the album took place in the Riga Reformation Church in August this year. The conductor of this project was the eminent Lithuanian master Modestas Pitrėnas.
The album contains well-known and textbook vocal masterpieces like Johann Sebastian Bach and Charles Gounod’s versions of Ave Maria, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Laudate Dominum, Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit from Johannes Brahms’ A German Requiem, Franz Schubert’s Ave Maria, Henry Purcell’s When I am laid in earth from the opera Dido and Aeneas, as well as opuses that are performed less often yet demand the highest vocal skills and artistic maturity. This collaborative effort of Marina Rebeka, Sinfonietta Rīga and the Latvian Radio Choir also contains compositions by Giuseppe Verdi, Alessandro Stradella, Gabriel Fauré, Francesco Durante, George Frideric Handel, Camille Saint-Saëns, Tomaso Albinoni and other authors.
A comment on the release of this recording from the representatives of the Europe- and US-based record label Prima Classic: “During times of despair and uncertainty, humanity seeks solace, strength and support in spirituality. The new album Credo by Marina Rebeka is a source of elevating inspiration, containing the works of the most prominent and astonishing composers of the Western civilization. This otherworldly and metaphysical music is deeply needed today.”
Sinfonietta Rīga and the Latvian Radio Choir hope to present this new album in March of 2021, in the case that the global pandemic situation will have stabilized by then.
