Programme: Robert Schumann Nachtlied, Op. 108 for chorus and orchestra; Franz Schubert Symphony No. 8 (the Unfinished), Johannes Brahms Song of Destiny for chorus and orchestra, Joseph Haydn Symphony Op. 103
While the symphonies of the gallant Viennese master Joseph Haydn regularly enjoyed enthusiastic reception in London, including the Symphony No. 103 with its ornate timpani solo, his compatriot Franz Schubert did not live to experience any of his symphonic scores manifested in full orchestral scale. The Romantic bard's Eight Symphony, labeled as the Unfinished due to at the time unusual two-part structure, was first performed decades after the composer's passing, conquering the hearts of the audience with its wonderful melodies and authentic expressivity. Classical and Romantic era masterpieces are the specialty of the currently rising star of the music world - Portuguese conductor Dinis Sousa, who was warmly welcomed by our most loyal audiences already last year. This time the former assistant of legendary Sir John Eliot Gardiner, having been educated in the best British musical traditions, together with Sinfonietta Rīga and Latvian Radio Choir will turn the spotlight also on the fervently melodramatic and rarely performed Nachtlied by Robert Schumann and otherworldly Schicksalslied by Johannes Brahms.
