A mood of wistful melancholy will permeate the Grammy-winning Latvian Radio Choir’s meditative and spiritual program in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Görlitz. Under the direction of its longtime Principal Conductor Sigvards Kļava, the celebrated choir from Riga will perform works by contemporary Baltic composers – a portrait of the impressive musical creativity of these northeastern European countries where singing is a cherished part of the cultural landscape. In addition to Baltic composers such as Arvo Pärt, Pēteris Vasks, and others, the program will also include music by Olivier Messiaen. His »Louange à l’Éternité de Jésus« is the fifth movement of his »Quartet for the End of Time«, which was composed while Messiaen was a prisoner of war in what is now the Polish city of Zgorzelec, just across the Neiße River from Görlitz. This program will build a musical bridge from France over Germany and Poland to the Baltic.
