Latvian Radio Choir

Sigvards Kļava, conductor

Singing in a choir is deeply rooted in the Latvian soul. This centuries-old choir tradition can be heard in one of the absolute top choirs in the world: the Latvian Radio Choir. For more than thirty years, the choir has been led by the seasoned conductor Sigvards Klava. During their long-awaited performance, they will make a spiritual journey through romantic and contemporary choir repertoire.

Starting from the theme Miserere , the Latvian Radio Choir presents a concert about deep-rooted faith and forgiveness in uncertain times. Composers from the distant and recent past (Mendelssohn, Schnittke, Penderecki) and the present (Pärt, MacMillan) draw inspiration from poetic psalms, liturgy and other religious texts. Choral music full of inner drama, sincere conviction and overwhelming beauty of sound.

Founded in 1940, the Latvian Radio Choir is praised for its spiritual, heartfelt empathy and expressive courage. The choir immerses itself in all kinds of singing techniques and is enthusiastically committed to contemporary music and Baltic composers such as Vasks and Pärt. 'A great musical force', was the verdict of The Washington Post about the Latvian Radio Choir.
